Following the events of the first four episodes, Max and Holly Wheeler are trapped within Vecna's mind palace. In the real world, the "Hawkins gang" develops a plan to "hack" into the hive mind by supercharging a creature's corpse with power from the WSQW radio station. Because of his long-standing connection to the Upside Down, Will Byers is able to project his consciousness into Vecna's mental realm. In this moment of suppression, Will makes himself visible to Max and Holly. He yells for them to "run" and find an exit, specifically a memory of Holly’s that serves as a portal back to reality.
