Was Mike Mentzer Right All Along? 🤫

Mike Mentzer believed most lifters weren't growing because they trained too much. His solution? Heavy Duty. Very few working sets, maximum intensity, and long recovery. One all-out set pushed to absolute failure instead of endless, comfortable volume. To modern gym culture, it sounds almost illegal. Influencers build entire programs around more exercises, more weekly sets, and more performance data. Mentzer’s followers say much of that is just "junk volume" designed to make simple training look complicated. Science makes the argument even messier. A 2025 study found that taking a single set to failure may modestly improve certain hypertrophy outcomes, but broader dose-response research still suggests additional weekly sets can produce more muscle and strength—at least until the workload becomes impossible to recover from. So Mentzer wasn't completely wrong.
