During World War II, the country lost a quarter of its population; villages were erased, families destroyed, and survival became the defining national experience. After 1991, independence finally returned, and with it a chance to choose a different future—but power soon concentrated, institutions hardened, and reform was closed off. In 2020, millions again demanded change; protests were crushed, prisons filled, and a generation fled into exile. As global tensions rise, control has become more valuable than prosperity—and Belarus is the country paying the price.
