This Wild Mustang Competition Wasn't What We Expected

In this video: Wild curly mustang Day 4 Brushing out a curly mustangs ringlets Basic groundwork with a wild mustang Picking up hind feet for farrier prep Cheyenne learns to lead Honey the South Steens HMA mustang Today is Day 4 with our wild curly mustang, and we are starting to see more pieces come together in her gentling journey. In this session, we take some time to brush out her ringlets and start working through that curly mane and coat. She is still learning what it means to be handled, touched, and groomed, so even something as simple as brushing is a great opportunity to build trust and confidence. We also continue working on basic groundwork and start asking for more softness, understanding, and movement. One of the big goals for this session is continuing to prepare her for real-life care, so we spend time working on picking up her hind feet. Farrier prep is such an important part of gentling a wild mustang, and we want her to learn that having her feet handled can be calm, fair, and safe. We also have another session with Cheyenne, our red roan White Mountain HMA filly. Cheyenne is starting to learn how to lead, and we are taking our time helping her understand pressure and release without overwhelming her. She is a more sensitive filly, so these little steps are a big deal. To wrap up the night, Jason spends time with Honey, our South Steens HMA mustang. Honey has been one of the most reactive, sensitive, and challenging mustangs we have worked with. She still carries a lot of fear and “stranger danger,” so part of her progress right now is simply learning that Jason can be around her without anything bad happening. This day is a great reminder that mustang gentling is not always about big flashy moments. Sometimes it is brushing out tangles, picking up one foot, taking one soft step on the lead, or just standing quietly with a horse who does not fully trust people yet.
