The San Giovanni mine, near Bindua (in the Iglesias area of Sardinia), has long been known for its rich deposits of lead and zinc. Mining began as early as 1829, but modern-scale operations started in the mid-19th century, with work commencing around 1859. By the end of the 19th century, San Giovanni had become a major mine, also renowned for its rare minerals, which had already been studied in 1897. In the 20th century, mining intensified with the development of tunnels, shafts, and ore processing facilities. In 1952, while drilling a tunnel, miners discovered the famous Grotta di Santa Barbara, now one of the site’s treasures. For decades, the mine provided a livelihood for many families in Bindua and the surrounding area, eventually becoming a central pillar of the local economy. Starting in the 1970s and 1980s, like many Sardinian mines, San Giovanni suffered from the crisis in the mining sector and declining profitability. Mining operations ceased in 1999, marking the permanent closure of the production site. Today, the San Giovanni mine remains a major site for Sardinian industrial heritage and the promotion of mining heritage through tourism.
