I Lived With a Pakistani Family for a Week | Lahore
I traveled to Pakistan for a wedding… but ended up spending an entire week living with a Pakistani family in Lahore.
What started as a postponed wedding turned into an unexpected week exploring Lahore, experiencing Pakistani culture up close, and discovering why this city is considered the cultural heart of Pakistan.
The weekend before had already been filled with wedding celebrations including the Mehndi and the Barat. But when the final event — the Walima — was unexpectedly delayed, I suddenly found myself staying with the groom’s Pakistani family for the entire week while we waited for the final celebration.
That week gave me the chance to experience Lahore in a way I never planned. I explored some of the city’s most famous landmarks including the Lahore Fort and the breathtaking Badshahi Mosque, wandered through the historic Walled City and Anarkali Market, tasted local food, and met some incredible people along the way.
Spending that time with the family also gave me a deeper glimpse into everyday Pakistani culture — from family gatherings to traditions surrounding the wedding itself.
By the time the final celebration finally arrived, the Walima felt even more special. The Walima is the final event of a Pakistani wedding, hosted by the groom’s family, where friends and relatives gather to celebrate the newly married couple.
What began as a trip to Pakistan for a wedding turned into something far more meaningful — a week exploring Lahore, experiencing Pakistani culture, and gaining a family I’ll never forget.
If you're interested in travel in Pakistan, Lahore street life, Pakistani weddings, or what it’s like for foreigners visiting Pakistan, you’ll probably enjoy this experience as well.
